Windsor Locks Special Olympics

Windsor Locks Special Olympics is a year-round program that provides sports training and competition. Persons with special needs with cognitive/adaptive functioning in or near the intellectually disabled range, starting at age 8 – adult (there is no upper age limit) qualify to participate. WL Special Olympics is now in its 28th year. Programs that are offered are track/field and cycling in the spring, croquet and bocce in the summer, bowling in the fall, and floor hockey in the winter. We have around 35 athletes and equally as many unified partners who participate in some or all our seasons. All the programs are unified where athletes and non-disabled unified partners train and compete together. Through this unified experience, athletes may improve several skills -  social/behavioral, communication, physical/athletic skills, and develop friendships. For each of the 4 seasons participants practice weekly for 8-12 weeks and compete in divisioning/time trial and State Games competition. Our WL program relies on fundraising efforts, donations and support of the WL Recreation Dept. and community.
